Before you start, gather your tools and products:
Before doing anything, insert shoe trees into both shoes. This holds the shape of the shoe, prevents creasing during cleaning, and makes the surface easier to work on. Saphir Luxury Shoe Trees are an excellent investment that also helps absorb moisture between wears.
Use a dry horsehair brush to sweep away loose dirt, dust, and dried mud from the entire shoe — including the welt (the seam where the upper meets the sole) and around the heel. This prevents dirt from being worked into the leather during cleaning.
Apply a small amount of Saphir Leather Cleaner Lotion to a soft cloth and work it into the leather in circular motions, covering the entire upper. This lifts embedded dirt, old polish residue, and surface contaminants without stripping the leather’s natural oils. Wipe clean with a damp cloth and allow to dry for a few minutes before moving on.
Cleaning removes some moisture from the leather, so conditioning before polishing is essential — especially on older or drier shoes. Apply a small amount of Leather Refresher Cream by Valentino Garemi using the included applicator cloth and work it evenly into the surface. Allow to absorb for a few minutes. Conditioned leather absorbs polish more evenly and produces a better, longer-lasting shine.
Choose your finish based on the result you want:
Once the polish has dried slightly (2–3 minutes), use the Saphir Polishing Brush to buff the shoe vigorously with quick back-and-forth strokes. The friction generates warmth that brings up the wax and creates a natural sheen across the surface.
For the highest possible shine, finish with a Polishing Cotton Cloth by Valentino Garemi. Pull it taut between your fingers and buff the toe cap and upper with rapid, light strokes. This final pass removes any remaining haze and produces a mirror-like finish.
Never use polish or cream on suede or nubuck — these materials require a completely different approach.
