How to Prepare and Care for Leather Sandals This Summer

Summer is sandal season — and if your leather sandals have been sitting in storage since last year, they need some attention before you wear them again. Heat, sweat, sunscreen, and UV exposure are all uniquely damaging to leather footwear in summer. This guide covers everything you need to do to prep, protect, and maintain your leather sandals all season long.

Why Summer Is Tough on Leather Sandals

Unlike boots and shoes, sandals expose leather to a unique combination of stressors:

  • Sweat and body oils – Direct skin contact transfers oils and salt onto the leather straps and footbed, causing staining and odour over time.
  • UV exposure – Prolonged sun exposure fades leather colour and dries out the fibres, leading to cracking.
  • Sunscreen and insect repellent – These products contain chemicals that can stain and degrade leather if not cleaned off promptly.
  • Heat – Hot pavements and direct sun can dry out leather rapidly, especially if it hasn’t been conditioned.
  • Water and sand – Beach and poolside use exposes leather to saltwater, chlorine, and abrasive sand.

Step 1: Start-of-Season Prep

Before wearing your leather sandals for the first time each summer, give them a proper refresh:

Clean First

Wipe down all leather surfaces — straps, footbed, and sole edges — with a leather cleaner to remove any dust, old product residue, or storage marks. Use a soft cloth or a small brush for textured areas. Allow to dry fully before the next step.

Condition the Leather

After cleaning, apply a leather conditioner or cream to restore moisture lost during storage. Pay particular attention to the straps, which flex with every step and are most prone to cracking. Allow the conditioner to absorb for 10–15 minutes, then buff off any excess.

Apply UV and Water Protection

Finish with a protective spray that offers UV resistance and water repellency. This is especially important for coloured leather sandals, as UV fading is one of the most common and irreversible forms of summer damage.

During the Season: Ongoing Care

After Each Wear

  • Wipe down straps and the footbed with a slightly damp cloth to remove sweat and oils before they set.
  • Allow sandals to air out fully before storing — never put them away damp.
  • If sunscreen or insect repellent has contacted the leather, clean it off immediately with a leather cleaner.

Weekly During Heavy Use

  • Give the footbed a more thorough clean, as this area accumulates the most sweat and body oils.
  • Re-apply a light coat of conditioner to straps if they feel dry or stiff.

Monthly

  • Full clean, condition, and re-apply protective spray to maintain the barrier against UV and moisture.

Caring for Leather Sandals at the Beach or Pool

Ideally, avoid submerging leather sandals in saltwater or chlorinated water — both are highly damaging. If they do get wet:

  • Rinse with fresh water to remove salt or chlorine.
  • Blot dry with a clean cloth — do not rub.
  • Stuff straps loosely with tissue to help them hold their shape while drying.
  • Dry at room temperature, away from direct sun or heat.
  • Once fully dry, condition and re-apply protector.

Dealing with Sweat Stains on the Footbed

Dark sweat stains on the footbed are common with leather sandals. To treat them:

  1. Mix a small amount of leather cleaner with water and apply to the stained area with a soft brush.
  2. Work gently in circular motions and wipe clean.
  3. For stubborn stains, a specialist leather degreaser can help lift embedded oils.
  4. Allow to dry fully, then condition the footbed to prevent it from drying out.

End-of-Season Storage

When summer is over, don’t just throw your sandals in a box. A proper end-of-season routine will ensure they’re ready to go next year:

  • Give them a thorough clean to remove all sweat, oils, and dirt.
  • Condition generously — leather stored without moisture will dry out over winter.
  • Apply a protective coat before storing.
  • Store in a breathable dust bag or wrap in soft cloth. Never use plastic bags.
  • Keep in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
