How to Protect Leather Shoes, Bags & Jackets This Winter – A Seasonal Care Guide

Winter is one of the harshest seasons for leather goods. Salt, slush, freezing temperatures, and moisture can crack, stain, and permanently damage your leather shoes, bags, and jackets if left unprotected. This guide walks you through exactly what to do before, during, and after winter to keep your leather looking its best.

Why Winter Is So Damaging to Leather

Leather is a natural material that reacts to its environment. In winter, three main threats combine to cause serious damage:

  • Road salt and de-icers – These draw moisture out of leather, leaving white stains and causing the fibres to dry out and crack.
  • Wet and slush exposure – Water soaks into unprotected leather, causing it to stiffen, warp, or develop mould.
  • Cold temperatures – Cold air strips leather of its natural oils, making it brittle and prone to cracking.

Step 1: Clean Before the Season Starts

Before applying any protective product, always start with a thorough clean. Dirt and old product residue can trap moisture and prevent conditioners from penetrating properly.

Use a dedicated leather cleaner appropriate for your leather type — smooth, nubuck, suede, or exotic. Gently work the cleaner into the surface with a soft cloth or brush, then wipe clean and allow to dry fully at room temperature.

Step 2: Condition to Restore Moisture

After cleaning, apply a quality leather conditioner or cream. This replenishes the natural oils that cold weather strips away, keeping the leather supple and preventing cracks.

Work the conditioner in with a soft cloth using circular motions. Allow it to absorb for 10–15 minutes, then buff off any excess. For heavily dried leather, a second application may be needed.

Step 3: Apply a Waterproofing Protector

This is the most critical step for winter. A waterproofing spray or wax creates a barrier against moisture, salt, and slush. Apply an even coat over the entire surface and allow it to dry completely before wearing or using the item.

Important: Always test any new product on a small, hidden area first, especially on coloured or delicate leathers.

During Winter: Ongoing Care

  • After each wear: Wipe down shoes and boots with a damp cloth to remove salt and dirt before it dries and sets.
  • Dry naturally: Never use direct heat (radiators, hair dryers) to dry wet leather — this causes cracking. Stuff shoes with newspaper and let them dry at room temperature.
  • Re-apply protector monthly: Waterproofing wears off with use. Reapply every 3–4 weeks during heavy winter use.
  • Store bags properly: Keep leather bags stuffed and stored away from cold drafts when not in use.

Treating Salt Stains

If white salt stains appear, act quickly. Mix equal parts white vinegar and water, dampen a cloth, and gently dab (don't rub) the stained area. Allow to dry naturally, then condition and re-protect the area.

After Winter: Spring Refresh

Once winter is over, give all your leather goods a full clean-and-condition treatment before storing them for the season. Store in breathable dust bags away from direct sunlight and humidity.
